President's Message

PTA

Dear VanGorden Families,

Whether you are new to VanGorden or a returning family, the VanGorden PTA welcomes you to the 2021-2022 school year! My name is Jessica Gearlds, and I am proud to be the PTA President. I feel strongly about the value of our PTA and our mission to enhance the educational experience for all VanGorden. I am fortunate to be working alongside so many committed and amazing individuals as we strive to bring enrichment to our students, staff, and community.

VanGorden has had a successful and committed PTA for many years, and during that tenure, we have been fortunate enough to use fundraised monies to equip the school with resources that include:

  • iPads and carts for classroom use
  • An awning to provide shade for students during recess
  • Umbrellas for our outside tables to allow teachers to hold class outside
  • A painted mural and reading nook in the lobby of the school
  • Funding for the STEAM lab

We also continue to provide opportunities for students that include:

  • Author visits
  • School Assemblies like COSI &
  • Character Education Programs
  • Donuts with Dad & Muffins with Mom
  • Field trip busing for each grade level
  • Artist of the Month Program
  • Afterschool Programs
  • Talent Show
  • Trunk or Treat
  • Book Fairs
  • Family Night

We support our staff regularly by providing conference meals, sponsoring a Staff Appreciation Week, volunteering for in-school functions, and providing funding for teachers to spend on the unique needs of their classrooms to help enhance the learning experience for their students.

We achieve these goals by hosting our two fundraisers each year: Soar-a-Thon (Walk-a-thon) in the fall and a Carnival in the Winter. These events help us raise the money needed to support our yearly programs and projects to provide a meaningful impact for our school.

Last year, as a PTA, we learned to be creative and innovative. The needs of our VanGorden community looked different but our mission never changed. We adapted to the situation, thought outside of the box, and were able to continue to provide learning and enrichment opportunities for our students and staff. It is our amazing families and volunteers that make it possible to plan and implement all the things we do.  Not just financially, but support through time, talent, and resources. We simply cannot do it without you! Please consider getting involved. We have a lot of ways you can make an impact with just a few hours of your time.

Below is a list of current positions we are hoping to fill.

Soar-a-Thon Committee Member

The Soar-a-Thon is our fall fund-raiser, and we are so fortunate to be able to raise funds in a fun way that our students and staff continue to be excited about year after year.  The Soar-a-Thon is currently co-chaired by two dedicated and experienced PTA members and they are looking forward to working with a group of people who share their excitement. If you are looking to be involved in a fun and important PTA activity, or if you have questions, please reach out to: vgeptavolunteers@gmail.com

Treasurer

In this position, the treasurer serves on the PTA Executive Board, attends meetings, and maintains permanent records to track unit funds and financial transactions. The treasurer prepares the annual budget for adoption by the PTA, pays all PTA bills as authorized by board or Association, prepares reports for every board and association meeting and an annual financial report. The treasurer also ensures taxes and reports required by PTA bylaws and insurance for federal/state governments are completed and submitted by the due dates. There are some PTA rules that regulate a check and balance system for the treasurer, and the treasurer must abide.

If you have questions or are interested in this position, please reach out to: vangordenpta@gmail.com

Display Case Coordinator

From time to time, we’ll need someone to put together a display case for an upcoming event or a season. We usually steal ideas from Google. Usually the President, VP, or Committee Head will reach out to this person to come up with a plan. We have all the materials stored at school, but on occasion, this person might have to buy a supplemental item and get reimbursed by the PTA.
